ABOUT  THE  ARTIST

The artist with Paint bred mare "The Colour Of Love"

Born in Newcastle NSW, Australia I have been drawing and painting horses since the age of 3. I spent my school age years in Auckland, New Zealand, taking Art as a subject at High School, preferring to draw horses instead of the usual Art Class projects.  At 13 I entered a pencil drawing of my first pony - a Welsh x Anglo Arab grey filly into the "NZ HORSE & PONY" magazine art competition and won 2nd prize.  At High School I began selling my work - using 6B pencils, coloured pencil and oil pastels at that time.

After leaving school I began working with horses, whilst still drawing them, but returned to Australia with my family due to a serious accident involving my youngest brother ,who had been hit by a car coming home from school when he was only 6 years old. This affected our whole family and hospital treatment options were much better in Australia for my permanently disabled brother, and we moved back to Newcastle.

In 1983-1984 I completed a course in Showcard, Ticketwriting & Calligraphy at TAFE Newcastle, NSW.

I found my way to the rural areas of the Mid North Coast, New South Wales, away from city life and in 1995 I began pursuing my art as a career, taking on commissions in between work, showing horses and studying.  I competed successfully in the show ring with Palomino, Paint, Pinto, Appaloosa and Quarter Horses in both halter and ridden events and undertook 2 years of the Horse Industry Course at TAFE Taree.  Now I paint full-time from my home studio, realising my dream at last. Most of my horses have been retired from the show ring but I still love to ride when I'm not painting.

Enrolling in a short course in 1996 I discovered soft pastels and  was hooked.  Pastels are wonderful for portraying the beauty of the horse; they capture the softness and reality of these gorgeous animals.  In 1997 I began private tuition in oils as I also enjoy this medium.  I use acrylics when painting the fluoro painted  ponies, because I love colour,  particularly coloured horses.  Other subjects I like to paint are landscapes, both in pastel and oils.

Inspiration for my paintings comes from a variety of sources, sometimes dreams and other times from the beauty that surrounds me - in the unique flora and fauna of our native Australian bush and my love for all things equine.

I have won over 90 awards in regional shows - many times the recipient of People's Choice Award, Champion and Reserve Champion Painting.  One of my equine paintings has gone on to be the featured artwork on a Texan wine label, (2009) giving me exposure across US.  Many of my pieces are private collections across Australia, New Zealand, United States, Europe and UK.

My work has been represented by Oasis Moon Gallery, Bellingen NSW; The Manning Regional Gallery, Taree NSW; The Other Side Cafe, Ghinni Ghinni NSW; The Morland Gallery, Wingham NSW; Not A Cafe Gallery, Wingham NSW; QPop Up Gallery, Kew NSW; Lila Lou's, Jackson, Wyoming USA; and currently The Edge Gallery & Framing, Taree NSW.

I live on a farm on the Mid North Coast of NSW, Australia with my partner, 2 dogs and currently 5 horses - (3 Paints & 2 Palominos).  Limited commissions accepted worldwide.

Below is a watercolour I painted when I was 13, I was crazy about coloured horses long before I owned them.
